Mgahinga vs Bwindi: Which Gorilla Trekking Park Should You Choose?
Uganda has two gorilla parks. Here is how they compare and how to choose.
Uganda offers gorilla trekking in two national parks, both in the south-west: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi is much larger and has many more gorilla families; Mgahinga is small and offers a different landscape built around three volcanoes.
For most travellers, Bwindi is the default, but Mgahinga has its own appeal. This page compares them. See also Bwindi and Mgahinga.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Bwindi | Mgahinga | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Large forest park | Uganda's smallest national park |
| Gorilla families | Many, across four sectors | Few |
| Reliability of sightings | High | Lower, because families can cross borders |
| Landscape | Dense mountain rainforest | Volcanoes, bamboo and montane forest |
| Other activities | Birding, Batwa experiences | Golden monkeys, volcano hikes, Batwa Trail |
| Best for | Most trekkers | Those wanting scenery and add-ons |
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Bwindi if seeing gorillas is the priority and you want the widest choice of sectors, dates and lodges. Choose Mgahinga if you want the volcano scenery and golden monkeys and are happy to accept a little more uncertainty. Many visitors combine both with a couple of nights near Kisoro.
How to Combine Them
The two parks are within a few hours of each other and share the Kisoro and Kabale area, so a route can include a trek in each, or a trek in one and golden monkeys or a hike in the other. See trekking sectors and Lake Bunyonyi, which fits well between them.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Factor | Bwindi | Mgahinga |
|---|---|---|
| Size and groups | Large forest with many habituated groups across four sectors | Smaller park with fewer groups |
| Landscape | Dense, steep ancient forest | Volcanic slopes in the Virunga range |
| Extras | Birding, Batwa and community walks | Golden monkeys, volcano hikes, Batwa trail |
| Predictability | Generally reliable sightings | Group may cross borders, so sightings can be less predictable |
| Permit availability | More options across sectors | Fewer options |
Which Should You Pick?
Choose Bwindi if you want the widest choice of dates and groups and the most dependable gorilla encounter. Choose Mgahinga if you enjoy volcano scenery and want to add golden monkeys and hiking, and you are flexible. Some travellers combine both. See Bwindi, Mgahinga and gorilla safari packages.
