Birding in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
At the base of the Virunga Mountain range sits Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — a top Uganda safari destination, and a hotspot for biodiversity thanks to its position between mountainous terrain and the Albertine Rift. Alongside globally recognised species like mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, it's genuinely excellent for birding.
Most of the park is covered in lush, moist evergreen vegetation spinning off from the Albertine Rift forest belt — ideal habitat for a striking range of bird species.
Incredible Birdlife
Mgahinga is Uganda's smallest national park, spanning about 33.7 square kilometres — but in total, around 185 bird species have been recorded here, drawing on the diverse Albertine Rift habitat.

When to Go Birding
You can go birding year-round in the park, though most species are easiest to find from April to May and September to November. For migratory species specifically, time your visit within these windows for the best chance of a sighting.
