Abseiling Sipi Falls: Uganda's Ultimate Adventure

As you're led to the edge of a metal rail, a firm rope fastened to your body and the rush of mighty water below, everything stands still. In that moment you're at war with your fears, and might even consider backing out entirely. But this is only the start — the birth of adventure.

Sipi Falls, much like the town where it sits, takes its name from an indigenous plant called “sep” that grows throughout the sub-region. Following a series of drops, Sipi Falls creates a world of wonder and spectacular beauty — with an assortment of birdlife to enjoy along the way, and several viewpoints to stop at.

Changing the Face of Adventure

Today, abseiling is the most exhilarating way to experience Sipi Falls. Unlike hiking, this is a direct, vertical descent — a rope attached to a harness around your waist, stepping off the cliff edge and lowering yourself down, flanked by a rainbow on one side and the green, rugged ridges of Kapchorwa on the other.

It's best not to look down, especially if you're feeling nervous — focus ahead instead. Part of the abseiling team cheers you on as you approach the ground, ready to help you out of the rope once you land.

How to Get There

Sipi Falls is located in eastern Uganda, roughly 5–6 hours from Kampala.

When to Go

The dry season is generally the best time to travel, especially for adventure activities — the weather in Kapchorwa is more predictable and trails are easier underfoot.

What You Need to Know

  • Even in the dry season, weather in Sipi can be unpredictable — carry a light rain coat just in case.
  • Wear comfortable hiking boots that can handle muddy patches on the trail.
  • Carry enough drinking water.
  • Wear comfortable, light trekking clothes.
  • It's generally best to trek or do your adventure activity in the morning, as afternoons often bring rain.

What Else Can I Do at Sipi Falls?

Sipi Falls is the ultimate ground for wonder and exquisite beauty — covered in deep green, riparian scenery that rewards a slower pace as much as the adrenaline of abseiling itself.
