Why Are Hippos So Aggressive? Facts About Hippos in Uganda

Hippos are territorial and protective, and are responsible for many deaths in Africa.

Hippos weigh around 1,500 to 1,800 kilograms and spend the day in water to keep cool, emerging at night to graze. They are territorial, especially bulls in the water, and mothers defend their calves fiercely. They can charge faster than a person can run over short distances on land.

Uganda's best places to see hippos are the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth and the Nile in Murchison Falls. Boat trips with trained guides are safe. See the Kazinga Channel, hippo census and boat cruises.
