What Do Gorillas Eat? Gorilla Diet, Foraging and Feeding Habits

Gorillas are mainly herbivores that spend much of the day eating.

Gorillas eat mostly plants: leaves, stems, shoots, roots and bamboo, and fruit when available. Insects such as ants and termites are an occasional addition. Mountain gorillas eat mainly foliage, while lowland gorillas eat more fruit.

Because plant food is low in calories, they spend a large part of the day foraging. See gorilla species and Bwindi, where you can watch them feed.

This guide is part of our animals of Uganda and East Africa guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Uganda safari holidays with Ameera Africa Safaris.
