Eastern Lowland Gorilla (Grauer's Gorilla): The Largest Gorilla and Where It Lives

The largest of all gorillas, found only in the eastern DR Congo.

The eastern lowland gorilla, also called Grauer's gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri), is found in the forests of eastern DR Congo, including Kahuzi-Biega National Park. It is the largest gorilla and has shorter, darker hair than the mountain gorilla.

The subspecies is endangered and has declined sharply because of conflict and poaching. Visitors can see mountain gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda instead; see gorilla species and Uganda vs Rwanda gorilla trekking.
