Uganda Safari Vacations for First-Time Visitors

Everything a first-time visitor needs to plan a confident Uganda safari: where to go, how long to stay and what to pack.

Planning a first safari can feel overwhelming. There are permits to book, parks to choose between and paperwork to complete. The good news is that Uganda is one of the most rewarding first-time safari destinations in Africa: compact, welcoming and full of variety. This guide gives you the plan in six steps.

It belongs to our hub on Uganda safari vacations; for the full range of itineraries, see Uganda safari packages.

Six steps

Step 1: Decide What You Most Want to See

Gorillas are the main reason many travellers come, but Uganda offers chimpanzees, savannah wildlife and landscapes as well. Picking one or two priorities makes every later decision simpler. Read the options in Uganda safari packages.

Step 2: Choose How Long to Go

One week is the sweet spot for a first visit; see packages by length. If you can only manage three or four days, choose a single highlight such as the 3-day Bwindi gorilla trek.

Step 3: Pick the Season

June to August and December to February are the driest; March to May and September to November are wetter and greener. Gorilla permits sell fastest for the dry months, so book early. See best time to visit Uganda.

Step 4: Sort Visas, Health and Insurance

Most visitors need a passport valid for at least six months and a visa, which can be obtained online through the e-visa system. A yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for entry. Talk to a travel clinic about malaria prevention and take out travel insurance that covers your activities. See Uganda safari travel documents.

Step 5: Decide What to Pack

  • Waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and lightweight long-sleeved tops in neutral colours.
  • A rain jacket, a sun hat, sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Binoculars, a camera with a spare battery and a power adapter.
  • Gardening gloves for gorilla treks and a small daypack.

Our downloadable resources include checklists.

Step 6: Book With an Operator You Trust

Check reviews, ask who actually runs the trip and confirm what is included. Read independent feedback on our reviews page and learn how booking works at how to book a Uganda safari.
