Uganda Family Safari Holidays
A family safari that works for every age: short drives, water activities, wildlife encounters and lodges that welcome children.
Uganda suits families better than many people expect. Parks are compact, wildlife is visible from the vehicle, boat cruises are relaxed and hands-on, and there are family-friendly places such as the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre and Lake Mburo that work well for younger children. The key is a pace that matches your children, not the most ambitious route on the map.
This page explains how to plan. For destination ideas and places to stay, see our Uganda family tours page, and for the wider range of holidays visit Uganda safari holidays.
At a glance
- Gorilla trekking minimum age: 15 years
- Easy for children: boat cruises, Lake Mburo, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre
- Pace: shorter drives, more nights per stop, a rest day if needed
- Tell us: the ages of everyone travelling so we can plan around them
Good Family Activities
- Boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel and the Nile: comfortable, wildlife-rich and suitable for most ages.
- Game drives in the early morning or late afternoon, with breaks and snacks built in.
- Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where you walk to see rhinos on foot.
- Lake Mburo National Park, close to Kampala, with zebras and giraffes and shorter transfers.
- Jinja and the source of the Nile for gentle boat rides. See the 1-day Jinja tour.
Gorilla Trekking With Children
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15, so younger children cannot join the trek itself. Families with teenagers can trek, and families with younger children can arrange activities for them while parents trek, or choose chimpanzee trekking and savannah parks instead. Tell us the ages in your group and we will propose a plan. See gorilla safari packages for how the permit works.
Choosing the Right Pace
Long days in a vehicle are the biggest challenge for children. Plan no more than four to five hours of driving in a day, stay at least two nights in each lodge, and include fly-in legs for the longest journeys if the budget allows (fly-in options). A flexible private vehicle lets you stop when children need to.
Health and Safety Tips
Speak to a doctor or travel clinic about vaccines and malaria prevention well before you go, carry sun protection and insect repellent and keep children close to the guide on walks. Our travel documents guide covers the entry requirements, including the yellow fever certificate.
Sample Family Itineraries
- Seven days: Kampala, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Murchison Falls and Lake Mburo.
- Ten days with teenagers: add a gorilla trek, as in the 8-day ultimate Uganda safari, plus an extra relaxing stay.
Family-Friendly Choices
Choose parks with shorter drives and varied activities, such as Lake Mburo and boat trips in Queen Elizabeth. Age limits apply for gorilla and chimp activities set by the park authority, so check before booking. Plan rest days, bring snacks and let children enjoy activities like the Entebbe wildlife centre; see Entebbe.
