Serengeti Regions Explained: Seronera, Western Corridor, Northern Serengeti and Ndutu

The Serengeti is huge, so choosing the right region matters more than choosing the right lodge.

The Serengeti National Park covers about fourteen thousand square kilometres, and driving from one end to the other takes a full day. Safari planners divide it into regions, each with its own character and best season, and most itineraries spend time in one or two of them.

Seronera, in the centre, has resident wildlife all year. The Western Corridor follows the Grumeti River, the north has the Mara River crossings and the south around Ndutu hosts the calving season. Read the Serengeti national park guide for an overview.

Centre

Seronera

The central valley has permanent water and a high density of lions, leopards and cheetahs. It is the busiest part of the park, but also the most dependable for game. Sausage trees and rocky outcrops called kopjes provide perches for cats.

West

Western Corridor

The Grumeti River, with crocodiles and riverine forest, lies along the route of the herds in May and June. Birdlife and colobus monkeys add variety. It is usually less crowded than the centre.

North and south

Northern Serengeti and Ndutu

Kogatende and Lamai are the bases for the Mara River crossings in the dry months. Ndutu, in the south, is the place to stay from January to March for calving. For timing details, see the migration calendar.
