Semuliki National Park: Hot Springs and Congo-Basin Birds

A lowland forest in western Uganda with Central African wildlife and geothermal hot springs.

Semuliki National Park lies in the western Rift Valley on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It protects lowland tropical forest that is an extension of the great Congo basin forest, which means it holds many species not found elsewhere in Uganda, particularly birds.

It is a good choice for keen birders and travellers who want to add a different habitat to a western Uganda route. See Uganda birding tours and the parks guide.

Plan your visit

What to Do

  • Birding for Central African species that are hard to find in the rest of Uganda.
  • Sempaya hot springs. Geothermal pools, including one that is hot enough to cook eggs, reached by a short walk.
  • Forest walks with a ranger guide.

Getting There

Semuliki is reached via Fort Portal, so it fits on the same route as Kibale. See driving distances.

Best Time to Visit

Drier months make the roads and trails easier, but birds can be found all year. See our season guide.

Planning

How a Semuliki Visit Works

Semuliki sits in the far west of Uganda, in the Albertine Rift on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a low-lying park, far hotter and more humid than the highland parks around it, and its lowland forest belongs to the same great Congo Basin forest system that stretches west across central Africa. That is why a short visit can turn up birds and mammals you will not find in Bwindi, Kibale or Queen Elizabeth.

Most visitors reach Semuliki from Fort Portal or from the northern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park, usually as a half-day or one-night extension. The activities are simple and well suited to a slow pace: a walk to the Sempaya hot springs, forest walks with a ranger, and early-morning birding along the old forest trail. See the driving distances between the parks before you decide how to fit it in.

Things to do

Best Activities in Semuliki

  • Sempaya hot springs walk: a short, easy walk to the male and female hot springs, where water bubbles up hot enough that guides demonstrate cooking an egg. It is a favourite with families and photographers.
  • Forest birding: the lowland forest is a draw for serious birdwatchers, including species with a Central African range. Hire a local guide and start at first light. See our Uganda birding tours for how this fits into a longer trip.
  • Nature walks: guided walks through the forest for monkeys, butterflies and forest elephants, though sightings are never guaranteed.
  • Cultural visits: communities around the park, including Batwa and Bamaga, offer local visits arranged through the park or your operator.
Our advice

Is Semuliki Worth Adding to Your Safari?

Semuliki is a good fit if birding or a different forest atmosphere is a priority, or if you are already travelling between Fort Portal and Queen Elizabeth and want something unlike the savannah. It is a poor choice if you only have three or four days and want classic big game or gorilla trekking; in that case spend the time in Queen Elizabeth or Kibale.

Wear light long sleeves and trousers, use insect repellent, carry water and expect heat. Rain can make trails slippery. For general health advice see vaccines and malaria prevention.

Frequently Asked Questions

For birders and travellers who want to see a different habitat, yes. For a short first trip, parks closer to the main route may take priority.

Most visitors spend half a day to one night. A full day makes sense if you plan to bird seriously in the morning and visit the hot springs later.

Yes, but it is a long drive from Bwindi. It is easier to combine Semuliki with Kibale chimpanzee trekking and Queen Elizabeth in a western Uganda loop. See Uganda safari itinerary ideas.
