Things to Do in Musanze, Rwanda: Caves, Lakes, Villages and Volcano Views

The gateway town to the gorillas has more to offer than a place to sleep before your trek.

Musanze, formerly known as Ruhengeri, sits at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes and is the main base for visiting Volcanoes National Park. The town has a lively market and plenty of lodges, and the volcano peaks rise just beyond the fields.

If you have a spare half-day around your gorilla trek, Musanze offers cave walks, lake scenery and community visits. Because most trekking happens in the morning, afternoons are a natural time to explore, and visitors who arrive a day early can settle in before the briefing.

Caves

Musanze Caves

The Musanze Caves are a system of lava tubes formed by past eruptions of the nearby volcanoes. Guided visits walk you through the main chambers with lights and a guide who explains the geology. Bring sturdy shoes, because the floor is uneven and sometimes damp.

Culture

Lakes, Villages and Culture

The Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo are a short drive away and suit boat trips and viewpoints. Cultural experiences in surrounding villages include dance performances, craft demonstrations and visits to farms, which put money directly into the communities that live beside the park.

Logistics

Getting There and Staying

The road from Kigali is paved and takes a few hours depending on traffic. Options range from simple guesthouses to high-end lodges near the park boundary. If you are coming from Uganda, see Kisoro to Volcanoes National Park for the border route.
