Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo: Rwanda's Twin Lakes Near the Volcanoes

Two deep lakes among terraced hills, an unhurried alternative to the busy trekking trails.

Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo lie in the hills of northern Rwanda, close to Musanze and the Virunga volcanoes. They are often called the Twin Lakes, and they are linked by a narrow channel. Steep, terraced hillsides drop to the water, and on clear days the volcano peaks stand in the background.

The area is quiet, and visits tend to be slow and scenic. A boat on the lake, a walk through a village or a long lunch with a view are the usual activities, which makes the lakes a good way to recover after a hard gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park.

On the Water

Local boats and canoes take visitors across the lakes to islands and fishing communities. Mornings are calm and clear, which suits photography. Life jackets should be provided, and it is worth asking before you set off.

Walks

Villages and Viewpoints

Walking trails link small villages, banana plantations and viewpoints over the water. Guides explain farming, fishing and local customs, and you can often buy crafts directly from the people who make them.

Fitting It Into Your Trip

Most visitors include the lakes on a rest day between gorilla trekking and the drive back to Kigali. See things to do in Musanze for other half-day ideas, and Lake Kivu for a larger lake on Rwanda's western edge.
