Mount Kilimanjaro: Height, Location, Map and Climbing Routes

Africa's highest peak is in Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border.

Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres at Uhuru Peak on the Kibo cone. It is in north-eastern Tanzania, near the town of Moshi and close to the border with Kenya. It is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest in Africa. The mountain has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira.

Most climbs take five to nine days, depending on the route. Popular routes are Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Rongai and Umbwe. See the 7-day Machame route trek and the Tanzania guide.

Best Time and Preparation

The drier months, roughly January to March and June to October, are the usual choice. Altitude sickness is the main risk, so a slower route improves success. Compare with Uganda's own Margherita Peak and mountains of Uganda.
