Best Time to Visit Kenya: Dry Seasons, Migration Months and Coast Weather
Kenya has two rainy seasons and two dry ones, and the best month depends on where you are going.
Kenya sits on the equator, so temperatures vary more with altitude than with the seasons. The long rains fall roughly from March to May and the short rains in October and November. The main dry seasons run from June to October and from December to March.
For wildlife viewing, the dry months are usually best because animals concentrate near water and grass is shorter. The Mara migration window is typically July to September, and the coast is hottest and most humid in the months around the long rains.

- Short rains: October to November
- Dry seasons: June to October, December to March
- Migration in the Mara: July to September
Safari Parks
Dry months give the best game viewing in Amboseli, Tsavo and Samburu. Rainy months bring green landscapes, fewer visitors and lower lodge rates, although some roads may be muddy.
The Mara Migration
Herds usually reach the Mara between July and September. See the migration calendar for details.
Mountains and Coast
Mount Kenya is best climbed in the drier months, and the coast is pleasant most of the year. Pack for rain at any time in the highlands. For Uganda's pattern, see Uganda by month.
