The Grey Crowned Crane: Uganda's National Bird and Where to See It

A tall grey bird with a golden crown, the crane appears on Uganda's flag and in many wetlands.

The grey crowned crane is Uganda's national bird. It stands about a metre tall, with grey and white plumage, a bristly golden crown, a red throat patch and a booming call. It is the only crane that roosts in trees, thanks to a long hind toe that grips branches.

Cranes live in wetlands and grasslands and are listed as endangered because of habitat loss and capture. Look for them in marshes, farmland edges and parks; see Uganda birding tours and the bird checklist.
