Golden Monkey Tracking in Uganda: Mgahinga Guide

A lively forest walk to spend an hour with one of the rarest monkeys in Africa.

Golden monkeys are bright, restless monkeys with a golden-orange back, found in the bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes. In Uganda they are tracked in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where a habituated group lets visitors watch them feeding, leaping and grooming at close range. They are listed as endangered, which is one reason the activity is carefully managed.

The walk is usually shorter and gentler than a gorilla trek, which makes it a popular add-on. Many visitors do it the day before or after their gorilla permit at Mgahinga.

At a glance

  • Where: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, near Kisoro
  • Typical time with the monkeys: About one hour, set by park rules
  • Effort: Easy to moderate, often through bamboo and muddy trails
  • Permit: Required and booked in advance through your operator

What to Expect on the Day

You meet at the park for a briefing, then walk with rangers to where the group slept or fed the day before. Golden monkeys move constantly, so photography is about patience and fast shutter speeds. The bamboo can be dense, and trails are often wet. Boots with grip, long trousers and a light rain jacket are sensible. See our packing list.

Combining Golden Monkeys With Gorillas and Volcano Hikes

A common pattern is gorilla trekking on one day, golden monkeys the next and a rest or cultural visit in between. Mgahinga also offers volcano hikes: Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Muhabura and Mount Gahinga. If you are choosing between parks, read Mgahinga vs Bwindi.

Golden Monkeys in Rwanda

The same species is also tracked in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. If you are crossing the border, see Uganda and Rwanda safari vacation and Uganda vs Rwanda.

Plan the day

Sample Plan

A typical Mgahinga day: breakfast, briefing at the park office, a walk of a couple of hours total with about an hour with the monkeys, then a relaxed lunch and an afternoon at leisure or a short cultural walk. Many guests do golden monkeys on the day after their gorilla trek, when their legs want something gentler.

The group moves quickly, so photographers should be ready with a high shutter speed. The bamboo forest is dim, so a fast lens helps.

Good to know

Practical Tips

Wear waterproof boots, long trousers and a rain jacket, and carry water and a small day pack. Do not eat in the presence of the monkeys, stay in the group and keep your voice low. If you have a cold or other illness, tell your guide; the same health rules apply here as for gorillas. For permits and weather, ask your operator to confirm what is available on your dates. Also see permit planning.

Timing

Best Time and Conditions

Golden monkey tracking works year-round. Dry months mean easier trails; rain makes bamboo slopes slippery and mist can reduce photo quality. Morning sessions are usually best for activity, and starting early gives you the day to rest or add a volcano hike.

Avoid these

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wearing only trainers on slippery bamboo trails.
  • Standing too close or touching the monkeys.
  • Trying to photograph with slow settings; movement is constant.
  • Not leaving a rest day after a gorilla trek.
