Things to Do in Kampala: Culture, Markets and Nightlife

Uganda's lively capital rewards a day or two before or after safari.

Most visitors pass through Kampala on arrival or departure. With a day or two to spare, you can discover royal heritage sites, museums, markets and an energetic food and music scene. Traffic is heavy, so plan a small number of stops rather than many.

A One-Day Plan

Morning: Kasubi Tombs and the Uganda Museum. Lunch in the city. Afternoon: Namugongo or a market. Evening: Ndere or a restaurant. Add a day for Entebbe sights: see botanical gardens and the wildlife centre.

Getting Around

Use arranged transport or reputable taxi apps. Allow extra time for traffic. See Entebbe airport guide and safety.

Plan the day

Sample Plan

Two-day plan: Day one for heritage (Kasubi, museum, Namugongo) and an evening show at Ndere. Day two for Entebbe sights (botanical gardens, wildlife centre) or a Jinja trip. Add a market tour if you like food.

Practical Tips

Traffic is the main challenge: group sights by area. Use trusted drivers or ride-hailing apps. Keep valuables hidden and plan buffer time before flights. See Kampala city tour and airport transfers.

Timing

Best Time and Conditions

Traffic is lighter in the morning and on weekends. Group stops by area. Plan heritage sites for the morning and evening activities for after sunset.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
