Namugongo Martyrs' Shrine: Uganda's Great Pilgrimage Site

A place of pilgrimage and reflection on the edge of Kampala, linked to events of the 1880s.

The Namugongo shrines honour Christians executed in the 1880s during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga. Catholic and Anglican shrines mark the site, and the Catholic Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs is a distinctive circular building. Pilgrims from across Africa and beyond gather here each year around 3 June for Martyrs Day.

At other times of the year, the site is a quiet place to learn history and reflect.
