Snakes in Uganda: Venomous Species, Safety and What Tourists Should Know

Snakes are present but rarely seen on organised safaris.

Uganda is home to many snake species, including venomous ones such as the puff adder, black mamba, green mamba, spitting cobras and Gaboon viper, and non-venomous species such as the African rock python. Snakes are generally shy and avoid people, and sightings by visitors on guided tours are rare.

Sensible precautions are simple: wear closed shoes on forest and bush walks, stay on trails, use a torch at night and follow your guide. See health and emergencies and safety for tourists.

This guide is part of our Uganda facts and travel information guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Uganda tours and safari packages.

If Someone Is Bitten

Keep the person calm and still, remove tight items, and get to a clinic quickly. Do not cut the wound or apply a tourniquet. Lodges and park staff know the nearest medical centre.
