Nile Delta Boat Trip in Murchison Falls: Shoebill Habitat on Lake Albert
The best place in Murchison to look for the shoebill.
The Nile Delta is a maze of channels and papyrus where the river meets Lake Albert. It is the most reliable place in the park to look for shoebills, and also rich in kingfishers, herons and African fish eagles.
Boat trips depart from the Delta area; see shoebill tracking and shoebill facts.

Where the Nile Meets Lake Albert
The Nile Delta boat trip leaves from Paraa or Wanseko and passes papyrus channels where the Victoria Nile enters Lake Albert. It is the best place in Uganda to look for the shoebill, a huge grey stork with a heavy beak. Other birds include goliath herons, malachite kingfishers, African fish eagles and many waterbirds.
Planning the Trip
Trips take a few hours, and guides use small boats to move through the channels quietly. Early morning gives the best light. Sightings are likely but not guaranteed. Bring a hat, sunscreen and binoculars. Read shoebill size and facts, and consider the Murchison Falls area for boat cruises to the falls.
