Masai Mara Big Cats and Game Drives: Lions, Leopards and Cheetahs
The Mara's open grassland makes it one of Africa's most dependable places to watch big cats hunt, rest and raise cubs.
The Masai Mara has a large and well-studied lion population, with prides that are often seen resting beside tracks or stalking herds. Cheetahs use termite mounds and open plains as lookouts, while leopards prefer riverine forest and rocky outcrops, so finding one rewards patience.
Game drives run at dawn and dusk when big cats are most active, and full-day drives allow packed lunches at picnic sites. Guides share information by radio, which is why local knowledge and good vehicles matter more than speed. See the wider Masai Mara guide for planning basics.

Finding Lions
Prides move between shade and water, and guides listen for alarm calls from baboons and antelope. Males patrol territory boundaries, while females lead hunts. Cubs stay hidden in thickets until they are a few weeks old.
Cheetahs and Leopards
Cheetahs hunt by day and rely on speed, so they are often seen in the morning. Leopards are more secretive and are often spotted at dusk in acacia branches. Staying quiet and keeping distance helps the animals continue their routines.
Etiquette and Safety
Keep voices low, stay in the vehicle and follow your guide. Responsible viewing limits the number of vehicles near an animal, which is a rule many conservancies enforce strictly. For the Uganda comparison, see Queen Elizabeth and its tree-climbing lions.
