Lake Tanganyika: Location, Map, Depth and Chimpanzees at Gombe and Mahale

The longest freshwater lake on earth, shared by four countries.

Lake Tanganyika lies in the Western Rift and is shared by Tanzania, the DR Congo, Burundi and Zambia. It is the longest freshwater lake in the world and the second deepest after Lake Baikal.

On the Tanzanian shore, Gombe Stream National Park is where Jane Goodall began studying chimpanzees in 1960, and Mahale Mountains is another chimp destination. Compare with chimp trekking in Uganda and the Great Rift Valley.

This guide is part of our East Africa travel guides. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Uganda tours and safari packages.
