Karamojong Culture and Kidepo Valley Communities

Cattle, community and craft in the dry north-east of Uganda.

The Karamojong are semi-nomadic pastoralists who live in Karamoja, the dry north-east of Uganda, where cattle are central to wealth, status and ritual. Villages are made up of compounds of small huts, and distinctive dress, beadwork and traditional ceremonies reflect an old way of life.

Visits near Kidepo Valley National Park allow guests to meet communities, see crafts and learn about daily routines, often alongside game drives in the park.

What a Visit Involves

A local guide introduces you to a homestead, explains livestock keeping, demonstrates daily tasks and shows crafts. Dress modestly and be patient with translation. Visits are best arranged in advance through your operator.

Responsible Choices

Pay fairly for crafts, avoid giving out sweets or money and do not treat people as photo subjects. See culture and heritage and fly-in safaris.

Plan the day

Sample Plan

Combine a Kidepo game drive in the morning with a village visit in the afternoon. In the village, you might see homesteads, livestock enclosures and craftspeople, and hear explanations through a translator.
