Bateleur Eagle in Uganda: Identification, Flight and Where to See It

A striking savannah eagle named for its rocking, tightrope-walker flight.

The bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus) is a medium-sized eagle with a short tail, red facial skin and legs and black, white and chestnut plumage. Its name comes from the French for a tightrope walker, referring to its rocking flight. It eats carrion, small mammals and reptiles.

Look for bateleurs in the savannah of Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls and Kidepo. See birding tours and Uganda bird species.
