Rwanda Visa, Money and Practical Information for Visitors

The practical details that make arriving and travelling in Rwanda straightforward.

Entry rules for Rwanda change over time, so check the current requirements with the Rwandan immigration authority or your operator before you travel. Many visitors are able to apply online or on arrival, and there is a joint tourist visa scheme for several East African countries that can be useful if you are also visiting Uganda and Kenya.

The currency is the Rwandan franc, and cards are accepted at larger hotels and shops while cash is used for markets, motorbike taxis and small restaurants. Rwanda is known for its cleanliness, and single-use plastic bags have been banned for many years, so avoid packing them in your luggage.

Transport

Getting Around

Private vehicles with a driver-guide are the usual way to travel between Kigali, Musanze, Akagera and Nyungwe. Roads are generally good, and many travel times are shorter than in neighbouring countries. Moto-taxis are common in cities but may not suit visitors with luggage.

Health

Health and Safety

Consult a travel clinic about vaccinations, including yellow fever requirements, and carry insurance with medical evacuation. Rwanda is regarded as one of the safer countries in the region, but normal precautions apply. See health notes for Uganda for similar advice.

Practical

Connectivity and Electricity

Mobile coverage is good in towns and along main roads, and local SIM cards are easy to buy. Plugs are generally the type used in continental Europe, so bring an adapter.
