Kingdom of Toro: History, the Omukama and Fort Portal Palace
A western Ugandan kingdom whose capital, Fort Portal, is the base for Kibale chimpanzees and the Rwenzori.
The Kingdom of Toro is a traditional kingdom in western Uganda. It broke away from Bunyoro in the early 19th century and is centred on Fort Portal. Like other kingdoms it was abolished in 1967 and restored in 1993, and today the Omukama is a cultural leader.
Fort Portal is also the gateway to Kibale Forest, the crater lakes and the Rwenzori Mountains, so a stop to learn about the kingdom fits neatly into a primate or hiking safari.
This guide is part of our Uganda people, culture and history guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.
