Tanzania Southern Circuit 7-Day Itinerary: Nyerere and Ruaha Without the Crowds
Seven days is enough for a rewarding southern circuit, with three nights at Nyerere for river and boat safaris, and three at Ruaha for big skies and predators.
Southern Tanzania is quieter than the north, with fewer vehicles, a wilder feel and more varied activities. Most visitors reach the parks by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam, so the transfers are short even though distances are long.
The plan below pairs two very different parks, and the following sections explain activities, seasons and practical points.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

- Day 6: A second Ruaha day, ideally with a bush breakfast or sundowner.
- Day 7: Fly back to Dar es Salaam for your international flight.
Why Combine Nyerere and Ruaha
Nyerere is a water landscape of rivers, lakes and channels, ideal for boat safaris, hippos and crocodiles. Ruaha is dry, rugged and vast, famous for predators and for being an area where several ecosystems meet. The contrast makes the trip varied. See the Ruaha and Nyerere guide and northern versus southern circuit.
Activities Beyond Game Drives
Nyerere offers boat safaris, guided walks and, with certain camps, fishing or night drives. Ruaha offers game drives, walks and sundowners in remote areas. These activities add variety and let you see wildlife from different angles. See Nyerere activities and Ruaha activities.
Flights and Logistics
Both parks are served by scheduled and charter flights, which make a southern circuit feasible in a week. Baggage limits are strict, so pack soft bags. Because schedules change, ask your operator for current options and build slack into your international connections. See getting to Nyerere, getting to Ruaha and flying safaris.
Best Time to Go
The drier months generally concentrate wildlife around water and make walking more comfortable. Wet months bring greenery and birds but can make some areas harder to reach. See best time for Nyerere and best time for Ruaha.
Stretching the Plan
Add Mikumi for a road-based extension near Dar es Salaam, or Udzungwa for forest walks. A beach stay on Zanzibar or the coast also fits. See Mikumi activities and Udzungwa activities.
Packing and Practicalities
Pack soft bags within the flight allowance, neutral clothing, a warm layer for early drives and insect repellent. Camps in the south are often small and run on solar power, so bring spare batteries. Tell your operator about dietary needs in advance, because supplies are brought a long way. Keep a flexible buffer before your international flight in case of weather delays.
What Makes the South Different
The southern parks feel remote because there are few lodges and fewer vehicles, so sightings are often private. Landscapes change from river channels and palm groves to dry riverbeds, baobabs and open woodland. Birdlife is rich, and predators such as lions and wild dogs can be a highlight when conditions are right. The trade-off is fewer animals per kilometre than the northern plains, so patience and a good guide matter more. See the Nyerere wildlife guide and the Ruaha wildlife guide.
Who It Suits
It suits repeat visitors, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers who like space and travellers who dislike crowds. It is less suited to travellers who want the migration, which is in the north. See Tanzania 4, 7 and 10 day itineraries.
