Kilwa Kisiwani, Tanzania: Swahili Ruins, History and How to Visit

Kilwa Kisiwani is an island off Tanzania's southern coast whose ruins mark a medieval Swahili trading city that once controlled much of the East African gold and ivory trade.

Kilwa Kisiwani lies near Kilwa Masoko in Lindi Region, about three hundred kilometres south of Dar es Salaam. Between roughly the eleventh and sixteenth centuries it was one of the most important Swahili city-states, trading with Arabia, India and beyond. The ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and nearby Songo Mnara were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1981.

This guide explains where it is, what remains and how to visit, and fits it into a southern Tanzania trip.

Getting

Getting Ready for the Visit

Wear a hat, closed shoes and sunscreen, because the ruins offer little shade. Carry water and small notes for entrance fees and boat tips. Tides affect boat schedules, so confirm times with your guide. Bring a notebook, since the history is rich, and ask guides about the traders, sultans and stories connected to each building. The island is quiet, so take your time and enjoy the atmosphere.
